"Seeing Toby Jones and Ben Cumberbatch in a film together again made me recall Amazing Grace which had similarities to Creation, though I liked Amazing Grace a lot more. Like Creation, it takes an enormous subject with lots of implications (the British parliament abolishing the slave trade) and looks at it through a particular aspect ... the relationship between William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) and his wife (Romola Garai), and also the strong friendship between Wilberforce and Prime Minister William Pitt (Ben Cumberbatch). Like Creation, this film also has an incredibly strong supporting cast ... seriously, I could go on and on… in quite small roles. From what director Michael Apted has said, I get the impression that he was only allowed to make the film with 3 relatively unknown leads (in the days before Ioan attacked Hollywood) if he lured in big names for other parts, as an audience draw. Anyway, Amazing Grace is a terrific film and I can recommend it."

American fans of Welsh movie star Ioan Gruffudd have donated thousands of dollars to a Welsh charity through the internet.
The Hornblower and Titanic star was amazed that fans from as far as New York, San Francisco and Chicago tapped into cyberspace to give cash to his home charity.
The actor backed Cardiff-based charity Tenovus by taking part in their video “The Rough Guide to Cancer” along with fellow Welsh star Catherine Zeta Jones and Yasmin le Bon.
Fans picked up the details on the internet and donated up to $3,000. The funds were raised through two Ioan Gruffudd fan clubs - the HMS Hornblower Message Board, run from San Francisco, and the Ioan Gruffudd Mailing List from Chicago.
“I am totally overwhelmed that my internet fans have clubbed together for such a worthy cause,” said Ioan.
“It’s amazing to think that money has been zipping across the globe through the internet.
“It means a great deal to me personally that my fans should raise money for Tenovus, which is such a true Welsh institution.”

IGN: Players Wanted: Fantastic Four Reboot
Jon Hamm as Reed Richards
We were torn between Mad Men's Don Draper and Bruce Greenwood (AKA Trek's new Christopher Pike) for the role of the smartest man ever made. But we put ourselves into (cringe) the studio's mindset and went with youth over age.
Hamm is one of the few actors who you can actually see thinking on screen, processing choices and risks that would come in handy for rebooting Reed Richards and keeping the character closer to his comic book origins. Hamm was also built to be a leading man and blend in with an ensemble, which is another win for the new Fantastic Four. Fox tends to tap rising TV talent for their feature film projects, see Jennifer Garner in Elektra, or Chiklis in the original F4 films. Hamm is the Clooney of cable TV right now. If he's not at the top of the studio's short list, he should be.

Not very precise, still sweet mention. :)
>> FINDING clothes to suit your figure is never easy, least of all when
you're pregnant.
So it's no surprise Ioan Gruffudd and his wife, Alice Evans, whose baby is
due in September, have been splashing the cash in A Pea in the Pod – a
favourite Beverly Hills haunt for celebrity mothers-to-be.
Gruffudd, originally from Llwydcoed, Aberdare, met Ms Evans, 37, in 2002
while filming 102 Dalmatians. They wed in Mexico in 2007 and announced they
were expecting their first child earlier this year.
Gruffudd revealed last month he already knew the sex of their baby, and said
he could not wait to become a father.
The 35-year-old said he'd been working “very hard” to keep his wife of two
years happy during the pregnancy, and added: “It's been one long summer, and
I've basically been the best husband in the world – or trying to be!”
Those good intentions were evident when pictures yesterday showed the couple
shopping at A Pea in the Pod just four days after attending the launch of
Nicole Richie's new and exclusive maternity line for the department store,
which has also provided maternity wear for stars including actresses Sarah
Michelle Gellar, Parminder Nagra and Marley Shelton.

-Ioan Gruffudd ("Fantastic Four") will star in U.K.-based HSL Studio's Kenneth Grahame biopic "Banking on Mr. Toad."
Helmer Bruce Beresford is attached to direct the project, which charts Grahame's journey to authoring of classic children's book "The Wind in the Willows." Pic will also touch on the relationship the author had with his autistic son.
Gruffudd was last seen playing Tony Blair in the bio pic "W." and can be seen next in "The Kid" with Rupert Friend.-

-The Cardiff-born actor has been cast as the writer in Banking On Mr Toad, which will focus on the peculiar tale of Grahame’s life with his wife Elspeth Thompson.
Gruffudd’s role in the film has more than a little in common with his great friend Matthew Rhys’ part in the Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge of Love.
In both films, the Welsh actors played famous writers in stories revealing details of their often tortuous love lives.
The Edge of Love revolved around Dylan Thomas’ relationship with his wife Caitlin and his alleged affair with family friend Vera Phillips.-

Ioan to be replaced by Cavill?
-MISTER FANTASTIC: Most recently portrayed by Ioan Gruffudd, it would appear that the ever-stretchy role of Reed Richards is up for grabs, thanks to Fox's rumored reboot of the “Fantastic Four” franchise. If Cavill couldn't land a spot on the Avengers lineup, perhaps he’d fare better with Marvel's first family.
The determining factor would be whether or not Fox chooses to age Reed's character — but if Cavill just adds a dash of gray to his hair, then playing Marvel's smartest superhero would hardly be a stretch for the budding actor.-

Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd will star as The Wind In The Willow’s author Kenneth Graham in Bruce Beresford’s Banking On Mr Toad.
Samantha Morton is also in discussions to star as the author’s wife. Shooting of the live action-animation film is due to take place in Ireland later this year.
The screenplay he been co-written by Timothy W Haas and Wendy Oberman and it will tackle the author’s family life, his high profile career at the Bank of England and his love for his autistic son.
Haas, who is also producing the film, has been given access to the Bank of England’s archive for the film, which is set in 1898, and John Keyworth, the bank’s longest serving officer, is acting as a consultant to the production.

In the July issue of Esquire, they did a small story on Ash Baron Cohen, and while he hasn’t made the most well-known films we've ever heard of, his story is wonderful and decorated with the praises of cinematic legends. Some of the films he has made are: Bang, which Roger Ebert called one of the best movies of 1997; Pups, which had Mischa Barton and Burt Reynolds; and probably his biggest project was This Girl’s Life, which starred James Woods, Rosario Dawson, Michael Rapaport, and Ioan Gruffudd. He also currently has three movies on the way that are in various states of production.

Amazing Grace
This film charts the political career of William Wilberforce, of which a great deal of time was spent trying to persuade fellow members of parliament of the barbarism and depravity of the slave trade - a system that was keeping the kingdom's coffers lined.
The acting is sublime; to be expected from such a talented line-up and Ioan Gruffudd proves his worth as the leading man. Whilst the action is kept firmly away from the Indies, we are left in no doubt as to the horrors of slavery and the savagery of this shameful period in history.

*******
This puts so simply something I've been mulling over in my head ever since seeing the movie. I'm sure you know Kirk was based in large part on Horatio Hornblower, but much as I like Shatner's Kirk, he never hit me on the same level as Hornblower, either the book character or Ioan Gruffudd's portrayal, and it's for exactly the reason you outlined. Hornblower claws his way up through the ranks despite the disadvantages of his birth and relative poverty. He doesn't lead a charmed life, but he's tenacious through every hard knock the story gives him, he has natural tactical brilliance, and inspires fierce loyalty in his men. (Also, both he and all incarnations of Kirk are basically like Wedge Antilles: *beep* just happens when they're around.)

Fantastic Four Reboot in the Works
June 16, 5:17 PM
Fox has announced that they will be rebooting the Fantastic Four franchise. The first two Fantastic Four movies were not received very well, despite the inclusion of Jessica Alba in a skin tight outfight. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was comparable to the massive flop Daredevil, also released by Fox. Hopefully this time around Fox will be able to create a movie worthy of Marvel's first family.
The studio has announced that this will be a complete reboot of the franchise, new cast, new story, new everything. They want to capture a darker feel for the new movie, and hopefully get a Dr. Doom who is actually menacing. It is not known whether this will be a new origin movie or not at this point, but it wouldn't be surprising to once again see how the Fantastic Four received their powers. An origin story would also help introduce the new cast and erase memory of Fox's original Fantastic Four origin movie.
The fact that a reboot is in the works so soon after the franchise's last movie says a lot, mostly about the quality of the previous movies. It seems Fox has also finally figured out that it pays to make a good comic book movie after seeing the success of The Dark Knight and Iron Man. Rather than turning out mediocre movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, Fox has realized they will have to start producing quality films to keep up with other studios. Hopefully this time Fox can put out a Fantastic Four movie that will do the comics justice. The new Fantastic Four movie is slated for a 2011 release.

WEDNESDAY 24 June - 20.00 DAL: YMA NAWR (2004) (Welsh language with English sub-titles) Director: Marc Evans (Snow Cake, Trauma, My Little Eye, Beautiful Mistake) Duration: 73min with thanks to S4CThis film takes the audience on a 2,000-year odyssey through Europe's oldest surviving bardic tradition. It takes in everything from Aneirin's sixth-century war reportage to today's modern poetry slams, along with subtle clues to the secrets of its survival. The film features some of Wales' greatest performing talents. Sian Phillips, Ioan Gruffudd, Matthew Rhys and Rhys Ifans are among those reading poems while singer-songwriters Cerys Matthews and John Cale perform their own arrangements of two Welsh melodies. The film has a stirring musical score composed by Catatonia's Owen Powell and Bedwyr Humphries.

- I find myself rewatching Fantastic Four now that I've seen the Horatio Hornblower: New Adventures movies (and Netflix, get on the ball and let me get the original 6 disc collection, I see it mocking me in Borders, why can't you be a friend like you have been all these months and move it from saved into my queue?). I just not sure which Ioan Gruffudd is better...but I think I have to go with the one with the accent. You win, Horatio. Sorry, Reed. You're awesome and smart and all but I have to stick with the Napoleonic war era naval genius version. I'm sure you understand.

"Little Dorrit," filmed in high-definition, comes from the pen of BBC "Pride and Prejudice" scribe Andrew Davies and stars Matthew Macfadyen, Tom Courtenay, Andy Serkis and Claire Foy. "The Old Curiosity Shop" might have an even better cast — Sir Derek Jacobi, Gina KcKee, Toby Jones, Martin Freeman and Zoe Wanamaker. And then there's "Great Expectations," with Charlotte Rampling, Ioan Gruffudd and Justine Waddell. The British take their heritage seriously and always seem to line up the best talent for their top-notch literary adaptations.

http://superlifestyle.dnip.net/Ioan-Gruffudds-Hairstyles/
The TV Set (2006). Showtime taping. A scattershot but funny satire on the TV industry that called to mind Lisa Kudrow’s underrated HBO series The Comeback. This one follows the pet project of screenwriter David Duchovny as he pitches an autobiographical drama to a crass, UPN-like network. The show is picked up, and mercilessly picked apart by a cadre of network suits headed by Sigourney Weaver as a power suited Gorgon who says things like “Originality scares me.” The film is somewhat half-baked at times, and I wish it could have followed the show past the affiliates’ preview to its airing and critical reception. For something so brief (90 minutes), it also had too many extraneous scenes following the supporting characters’ private lives (gorgeous as he is, I didn’t really need to know about the tortured home life of Ioan Gruffudd’s exec). For all its faults, though, I enjoyed it as a “scary if it wasn’t so true” tonic.

What a shame that the "Life" had a DNR. It has been awhile since we enjoyed a new show like we did Life. Damian Lewis was great and I hope he ends up on the big screen. Band of Brothers was a fantastic performance and it reminded me of Ioan Gruffud's performance in the Hornblower Series.

Pretty bad; or maybe not bad enough. Ioan Gruffudd, so adorable as Horatio Hornblower, just looked perplexed as the 18th century English abolitionist William Wilberforce. So far as I could tell, the only woman in the film -- I can't really say this with any certainty because I watched so little of it, but I bet I'm not far off -- is the exquisitely beautiful Romola Farai. She is so clearly telegraphed as the Love Interest that when she and Horatio -- sorry, Ioan -- meet cute, you just want to fall on your knees and beg them to get on with it and not put you through the predictable preliminaries. Meanwhile Albert Finney is pushing a broom around a cathedral wearing some kind of dreadful off-the-shoulder monastic nightgown.

Word that Tony Blair, 56 next month, was expecting to become a father for the fifth time seemed rather improbable.
Happily, it turns out to be his 35-year-old imitator, Welshman Ioan Gruffudd - he played the former Prime Minister in Oliver Stone's W - who is celebrating the good news.
Gruffudd's pretty wife Alice Evans, 37, is pregnant with their first child. The couple, who met on the film set of 102 Dalmatians and married 18 months ago, were keen to start a family.
'They are delighted with the news and very excited about becoming parents,' says a chum.

The Cambrian Benevolent Society of Chicago is pleased to announce its first Welsh Film Night.
The movie “Solomon and Gaenor” will be shown at the Wilmette Public Library on Friday May 29th, 2009 at 6:30pm. It stars Ioan Gruffudd (Solomon) and Nia Roberts (Gaenor) as two young lovers from widely divergent backgrounds. It is set in South Wales in 1911. He is from an orthodox Jewish family that peddles fabrics door-to-door to Welsh households in the valleys; she is the daughter of strict chapel-going parents. Their attraction for each other brings to a head deep seated feelings of resentment against the ‘foreigners’ and results in tragic consequences for the young couple. Our own Winston Evans has a small part as the postman in the movie.

This Friday evening found us at church for the monthly movie night, which my husband and a current seminarian began hosting a few months ago. This evening's film was "Amazing Grace," the 2006 film inspired by the life of William Wilberforce.
D. and I originally saw the movie back in the fall of 2007. I loved it then, as you can see from my review here, but I loved it even more the second time around. Perhaps this time I wasn't so focused on seeing whether or not they were historically accurate in the way they portrayed one of my favorite heroes of the faith. This time I just sat back and soaked in the wonderful performances. All of them were excellent, but Ioan Gruffudd was really masterful as Wilberforce. I remembered how well he captured his passion and drive; I hadn't remembered so vividly how he captured his frailty and exhaustion.

Watch what this LJ says...
Fore! Alice's swing gives Gruffudd a great shiner
Like a machete perforating the Mona Lisa smile, a domestic mishap has blemished the famously chiselled features of the Welsh thespian Ioan Gruffudd.
The actor, 34, who played William Wilberforce in Amazing Grace, sported heavy make-up at Sunday night's Welsh Baftas in Cardiff, where he picked up the Tlws Siâ*Phillips Award (pronounciation, anyone?) for his contribution to film. Beneath the slap on his left cheek, there was an unmistakable shiner of a black eye.
The explanation? His wife, the actress Alice Evans, 36, apparently whacked him in the face with a golf club – but it was an accident, mercy be. The couple married in Mexico in September, and there is clearly no trouble in paradise.
Collecting his gong, Gruffudd paid tribute to Evans, who was back home in Los Angeles: "Love you, baby angel."
Fetch my nine iron...

Bill Moyers did a special on "Amazing Grace" that runs on PBS every so often. And the 2006 film Amazing Grace ain't bad and is well cast (Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Romula Garai and Michael Gambon, among others). Wilberforce's commitment to social justice is driven in part by his religious convictions, although some of his cohorts have different motivations. Seeing and hearing about the realities of the slave trade – especially handling the shackles and smelling the rankness of the ships – also has a strong impact on Wilberforce and those he tries to move. The film's particularly good at depicting the dangers for activists of burnout, and what friendship and community can do to alleviate those. The slave trade was very profitable, and that was the chief objection in Britain's parliament to ending it. The film also shows a very clever side maneuver for achieving abolition.
