The Kid - Diary Of An Extra
Garden Comment
*******
Fireflies, though, was decent enough, even though it seemed to want to be seen of as a higher art form than the Sunday-night-TV fodder it probably really is. Also, Ioan Gruffudd is hot although his role is small and he is also supposed to be playing present-day Julia Roberts's "older" lover but looks much younger, so isn't entirely convincing.

Michael Apted's Amazing Grace stars Ioan Gruffudd--in another corner of his career, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four---as William Wilberforce, the abolitionist firebrand who was central to Britian's outlawing of slavery. I don't want to say that there's not a lot of drama in a subject like the abolition of slavery because there's not a lot of room for moral shades of gray in the issue, or because we know how it'll turn out; still, I wish the most genuinely exciting (and instructive) part of the movie deals with the way the more cunning politicians involved in the fight were able to resort to parliamentary trickery to get their way, and I wish there were more of that sort of thing in the picture and fewer scenes of Wilberforce's vile enemies laughing, Mwah-hah-hah, into the camera lens.

My favourite celebs to chat with are some of our Welsh stars. While there are a few who drop you like a tonne of bricks as soon as they taste stardom (you know who you are!) the ones who are really conquering the world always have time for the Welsh Press. Matthew Rhys never fails to respond to a call, even if he is filming in the desert, Michael Sheen and Ioan Gruffudd are always happy to chat, as is Katherine Jenkins.

Flattering W Mention
W
A compelling, comedic and disturbing film that tells the life story of George W Bush, Oliver Stone's 'W' jumps backwards and forwards from the events following the invasion of Iraq, back to when Bush was a young tearaway at Yale. Perfectly cast, actor Josh Brolin portrays the verbally challenged President, while screen veteran Richard Dreyfuss plays his equally controversial vice President Dick Cheney. British audiences should keep a special look out for Ioan Gruffudd's brilliant portrayal of Tony Blair in the film. Although most of Gruffudd's scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, they can be found in the deleted scenes featured on the DVD.

AG Mention From Stephanie:
The first time I saw the movie Amazing Grace on a flight from LA to Sydney it seemed one of the most boring, drawn out movies I could remember seeing, and so I stopped watching half way through. I must have been dead-tired at the time because when I re-watched it a few weeks ago, it struck me as one of the most amazing stories I've seen in a long time.

A Doc Savage Movie - Ioan Would Be OK, according To Omiconic
At some point, it will surely get made (there has been some hint that Sam Raimi might have some role as director and/or producer). Casting? Daniel Craig would make a fine Doc Savage, Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd andStephen Dillane would all make a dashing supporting group for Doc. Sam Raimi has expressed some interest in producing/directing a new Doc Savage film. For now, pulp/Doc Savage fans will have to content themselves with this 70s piece of solid gold junk.

"Little Dorrit," filmed in high-definition, comes from the pen of BBC "Pride and Prejudice" scribe Andrew Davies and stars Matthew Macfadyen, Tom Courtenay, Andy Serkis and Claire Foy. "The Old Curiosity Shop" might have an even better cast — Sir Derek Jacobi, Gina KcKee, Toby Jones, Martin Freeman and Zoe Wanamaker. And then there's "Great Expectations," with Charlotte Rampling, Ioan Gruffudd and Justine Waddell. The British take their heritage seriously and always seem to line up the best talent for their top-notch literary adaptations.

The TV Set (2006). Showtime taping. A scattershot but funny satire on the TV industry that called to mind Lisa Kudrow’s underrated HBO series The Comeback. This one follows the pet project of screenwriter David Duchovny as he pitches an autobiographical drama to a crass, UPN-like network. The show is picked up, and mercilessly picked apart by a cadre of network suits headed by Sigourney Weaver as a power suited Gorgon who says things like “Originality scares me.” The film is somewhat half-baked at times, and I wish it could have followed the show past the affiliates’ preview to its airing and critical reception. For something so brief (90 minutes), it also had too many extraneous scenes following the supporting characters’ private lives (gorgeous as he is, I didn’t really need to know about the tortured home life of Ioan Gruffudd’s exec). For all its faults, though, I enjoyed it as a “scary if it wasn’t so true” tonic.

What a shame that the "Life" had a DNR. It has been awhile since we enjoyed a new show like we did Life. Damian Lewis was great and I hope he ends up on the big screen. Band of Brothers was a fantastic performance and it reminded me of Ioan Gruffud's performance in the Hornblower Series.

Pretty bad; or maybe not bad enough. Ioan Gruffudd, so adorable as Horatio Hornblower, just looked perplexed as the 18th century English abolitionist William Wilberforce. So far as I could tell, the only woman in the film -- I can't really say this with any certainty because I watched so little of it, but I bet I'm not far off -- is the exquisitely beautiful Romola Farai. She is so clearly telegraphed as the Love Interest that when she and Horatio -- sorry, Ioan -- meet cute, you just want to fall on your knees and beg them to get on with it and not put you through the predictable preliminaries. Meanwhile Albert Finney is pushing a broom around a cathedral wearing some kind of dreadful off-the-shoulder monastic nightgown.

The man of good abilities and good emotions
How about Hugh Jackman? The age seems about right, he's good at period drama -- having been the only watchable element in Kate and Leopold -- and I think he's got the range for it. And having a friend who adores him, I'd never want for company no matter how many times I went to see it! Ioan Gruffudd might be another possibility, having got both the period thing and the heroic thing down pat.
I think Ioan Gruffudd would be great! He was wonderful in Amazing Grace and he seems the right age, younger than Russell Crowe and Colin Firth; the only thing is I imagine him being more polished than Carton (he'd definitely be a good Darnay).
